Detention, demurrage, Per Diem and storage charges
Detention refers to the costs incurred when containers are held beyond the period of exemption initially provided.
These fees are charged by the container owner to shippers or consignees who do not return the containers within the allotted time.
Demurrage is a financial penalty that is charged to the customer when containers are not returned on time to the dry port or the agreed container depot.
What are storage charges?
A storage charge is applicable for containers left inside container yard after terminal free time expiration. In Chad SMT (dry port) the one managing storage calculations and payments.

Government approval status
The government position regarding the implementation of the verified gross mass (VGM) amendments in the SOLAS Convention has been defined 2016.
The verified gross mass is the total verified mass of a container, including the weight of the contents and the container itself. This information is crucial for shipping companies to ensure the safety of ships and port workers. Verification of gross mass is mandatory for all containers before loading on board ships. In Chad, it is the Directorate of Roads that is responsible for verifying VGM.
What do I need to include in my VGM instructions?
You must include the following on all VGM instructions:
- Booking or Bill of Lading (BL) number
- Container number
- VGM (kgs)
- Shipper/Authorised Party’s signature
- Shipper/Authorised Party's name

VGM instructions should be submitted through myMSC portal
Deadlines for sending VGM instructions
Instructions must be recorded before the vessel closing date
Admin fees and costs
Any cost or consequences caused by delay, misdeclaration or manual entry of VGM instructions is payable by shipper.

ECTN in Republic of Chad
ECTN must be included on OBL for all shipments destinated to Chad. The ECTN is the abbreviation for Electronic Cargo Tracking Notice (in French bordereau Electronique de Suivi de la Cargaison: BESC). The ECTN is mandatory both for export and import cargo. The Import ECTN must be arranged by the shipper or his representation. The Export ECTN must be arranged at “Conseil des Chargeurs du Tchad head office by the local exporter. An approved ECTN can be corrected before arrival of the vessel at Douala Port.

The following are prohibited for both important and export
- Illegal drugs
- Guns, explosives and ammunition
- Knives and deadly weapons
- Pornographic material
