MSC Expands Logistics with Weekly Rail Service from Gioia Tauro with MEDLOG

14/04/2025

MSC is pleased to launch a new weekly rail service, through its logistics arm MEDLOG, connecting the southern port of Gioia Tauro with Verona. The service is designed to provide an efficient inland solution for reefer cargo.

The new rail connection will enable temperature-controlled containers to move inland swiftly and efficiently, reducing transit times and eliminating the need for transhipments, which is especially valuable for perishable goods like fruits and vegetables. It will be particularly beneficial for Italy's agri-food sector, which relied on nearly 340,000 reefer containers to move goods in 2024*.

The service will run weekly and completes the journey from Gioia Tauro to Verona  in 24 hours, offering a fast, predictable inland route that connects directly with MSC’s global ocean network.

Key customer benefits include:

Direct rail access from Gioia Tauro to Northern Italy, avoiding potential road congestion
Reduced transhipment, maintaining cold chain integrity
Faster transit times to European distribution hubs
End-to-end logistics managed by MSC and MEDLOG, ensuring visibility and control

Supporting Supply Chain Decarbonization

This initiative also supports logistics decarbonisation. By shifting cargo from road to rail, the service contributes to lower CO₂ emissions and improved energy efficiency, in line with EU recommendations for greener freight transport.

The launch highlights the company’s commitment to strengthening Italy’s intermodal infrastructure and providing innovative, sustainable logistics solutions tailored to customer needs.
