Restoring Smiles: MSC Vietnam Uplift Lives of Children with Cleft Conditions

03/10/2024

Cleft lips and palates are a significant issue in Vietnam, affecting approximately 3,000 children each year. In remote and rural areas, many children still await corrective surgery due to limited healthcare infrastructure and financial constraints.

In June 2024, MSC Vietnam took a meaningful step to improve this narrative by partnering with Operation Smile to make a tangible impact on the lives of these children. Together, they are enabling transformative surgeries for children with craniofacial deformities, including cleft conditions. By helping these young patients regain their smiles, this initiative not only improves their quality of life but also enhances their opportunities for social integration and personal development, paving the way for healthier futures.

Beyond financial support for patients to receive corrective surgery, MSC Vietnam employees also volunteered their time at My Thien Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, the capital of Vietnam. They offered non-medical assistance by explaining the surgery process and guiding patients and their families through check-in, testing areas, and waiting rooms.

Uplifting Communities and Driving Meaningful Changes

“At MSC Vietnam, we believe that every child deserves the chance to smile. Through our partnership with Operation Smile, we strive to create a brighter future for children with cleft conditions; one filled with opportunities. This reflects our commitment to uplifting the communities we operate in and driving meaningful changes to enable a sustainable future for all,” said Benoit De Quillacq, Managing Director of MSC Vietnam.

This initiative aligns with MSC’s global sustainability priorities, particularly in addressing social challenges.

Partnering for Change: Improving Lives with Medical Care

In appreciation of MSC Vietnam’s dedication to the local community, Mr. Nguyen Viet Phuong, Chief Representative of Operation Smile Vietnam, remarked, “We highly value the partnership with MSC and look forward to continued collaboration in charitable activities that improve health and provide access to medical care for disadvantaged individuals with facial deformities.”

A renowned international children’s medical charity, Operation Smile has delivered over 75,000 screening and surgical services in Vietnam over the past 35 years.
